The best mountain bike trails
There are 450 kilometres of waymarked MTB trails in south Limburg alone. You’ll find everything you need to push yourself to the limit, from tough climbs to hair-raising technical descents. One of the very best trails is in Landgraaf. Prefer something farther north? Here’s a handy MTB route planner for central Limburg.
Tree-top climb
You know you’re safely secured, but even so: climbing up into the tree tops is a thrill. If you’re looking for a tree-climbing adventure, then you’ll be spoiled for choice in Limburg. There’s adventure park Het Plateau in Brunssum, where you can also try your hand at mountain biking or archery or simply go for a walk. There’s Klimkong in Sevenum, with climbing routes that have you swinging from tree to tree or tackling an adventurous obstacle course in a ‘climbing ship’. There’s Klimbos Weert, with views of IJzeren Man leisure park as well as swimming or water skiing. And finally, there’s Fun Forest Venlo, the Netherlands’ very first adventure climbing park. Clamber through cars and finish off with a free-fall jump!
Barefoot adventure
When was the last time you went barefoot outdoors? It’s safe to take off your shoes at Barefoot Park Brunssum. The foot-friendly path through the woods and along ponds will spoil your tootsies and tickle your toes at the same time. Walk on pine cones and pebbles, bury your feet in mud and enjoy the lushness of a forest path. Refreshing for body and ‘sole’!
Nature at night
It's generally not wise to walk around a nature reserve at night, but under a forest ranger's guidance it can turn into an exciting adventure. Marvel at the starry skies and go in search of nocturnal animals in one of Limburg's nature reserves. The Dutch Forestry Commission organises evening and night walks in De Meinweg and De Groote Peel National Parks.
Zip-lining
If you're not afraid of heights and adore scenic vistas, then try zip-lining from the top of Wilhelmina Tower in Valkenburg. The dizzying 100-metre descent starts at the top of this 35-metre-tall hilltop tower.
Longest stairway in the Netherlands
Challenging and absolutely free, the longest stairway in the Netherlands is located next to the SnowWorld complex in Landgraaf. Get ready to climb no less than 508 steps to the top of Wilhelminaberg. Once there, you’ll have a stupendous view of the Parkstad region. The stairway keeps many a local fit and healthy and is often teeming with exercise enthusiasts. In the evening, the view changes into a sea of lights.
