The province Limburg in the Nederlands is known for its hospitality, delicious food, beautiful nature, and plenty of watersport opportunities. The region is also a paradise for cyclists, with excellent facilities for biking.
But what many don’t know: the province also has the most watermills in the Netherlands. These mills, many of them centuries old and powered by waterwheels, are silent witnesses of a time when water power was the heart of the local economy.
From grinding grain to artisanal production, these mills always played a central role in the daily lives of the people. Discover how some of these mills are still running today and continue to preserve their historical value.
Arcen: Wijmarsche Mill
The Wijmarsche watermill in Arcen, built in 1677, played an important role in agriculture. Farmers were required to have their grain milled here. Although the mill was destroyed during the war, it was restored in 1993 and is operational again.
Today, you can visit a café and a grain distillery at the mill. Book a tour of the mill or distillery!
Vlodrop: The Gitstapper Mill
The Gitstapper Mill, built in 1377, is one of the oldest working watermills in Limburg. It’s located near the German border and still mills flour at certain times. The mill is powered by water from the Rothenbach stream, which forms the border between Germany and the Netherlands.
There’s also a shop at the Gitstapper Mill where you can buy delicious local products, some of which are made in the mill itself. Every Saturday and Sunday, fresh spelt bread is baked here.
Maastricht: The Bisschopsmolen
In the heart of Maastricht, you'll find the Bisschopsmolen, one of the oldest working watermills in the Netherlands, dating back to the 11th century. The mill is still used to grind artisanal flour, which is turned into delicious breads and pastries in the adjacent bakery.
You can even buy a slice of fresh 'Vlaai' (local pastry), made with flour milled on-site. Enjoy it straight from your hand, just like the locals do!

Gulpen: Neubourger Mill / Roex
The Neubourger Mill, also known as the Roex Watermill, is a mid-level watermill on the edge of the picturesque town of Gulpen. This historic mill has been owned by the Roex family for almost a century and still uses the fast-flowing Gulp River for power.
In addition to grinding grain, the mill also generates electricity, showcasing sustainable technology in an ancient building. The impressive waterwheel and scenic surroundings make the Roex Mill an attractive destination for walkers, cyclists, history lovers, and anyone interested in the unique blend of nature and heritage.
