Are you an avid trail runner? Great! In Limburg, there are plenty of opportunities for trail running, whether in organized races or on your own. But where can you find beautiful and challenging routes? Where can you go? That's why we've selected 5 trail running routes for you!
1. Trailrun Brunsummerheide
Trail Run at Brunssummerheide The Brunssummerheide in South Limburg is a fantastic spot for trail running. This expansive natural area between Brunssum, Heerlen, and Landgraaf spans 1800 hectares and offers a mix of heathlands, deciduous, and coniferous forests. The trail run route provided by Natuurmonumenten covers a distance of 10.9 kilometers. It includes two slight climbs that will require a bit of effort, but the landscape gently undulates throughout the journey. From low-lying stream valleys to the slightly elevated heath fields, the trail on Brunssummerheide never gets boring. Best of all, this route is free to access and can be enjoyed all year round.
2: Trail Epen
Op deze trail ontdek je de omgeving van Epen en het aanpalende Belgisch grensgebied. Op een route van 12,5 kilometer lang met een gemiddelde moeilijkheidsgraad, steek je de grens over naar de Belgische Voerstreek. Vanuit het Beusdalbos en het Bovenste Bos kijk je neer op kleine dorpjes zoals Remersdaal en Teuven. Het parcours gaat op en neer, maar laat de zwaarste hellingen links liggen. De trail in en om Epen kun je het hele jaar lopen.
3: De Dutch Mountaintrail
The Dutch Mountain Trail is a challenging trail of over 100 kilometers that connects 7 mountain peaks. It's divided into 5 stages. This trail avoids paved roads as much as possible, making it a challenge even for experienced hikers or trail runners. One of the stages extends all the way to Maastricht. Along the way, you'll conquer the Observant and pass through the impressive ENCI quarry.

4: De Herkenbosch trail
In the Meinweg National Park, you can experience the Herkenbosch Trail. It offers various distances to choose from. As you traverse this ancient forest with its terraced landscape, it presents an exciting challenge for trail runners to conquer its three distinct terraces, each about 50 meters apart in elevation. If you're an early bird, you might even come face-to-face with one of the local inhabitants of this area: the wild boar.
North Limburg
In North Limburg, you can truly indulge your trail running passion with various routes through places like Mookerhei, Mook & Middelaar, and Plasmolen. In less than two hours, you can traverse through four distinct landscapes.
